Viral social media challenges come and go over the years, but there are a few gems borne from the self-deprecating humor that has come to define people’s reaction to the COVID-19 crisis. These could have the legs required to last beyond this unusual period, as they are good-spirited and highly creative.
For youngsters, there are plenty of crazes hitting TikTok, including creative responses to sounds that include coronavirus-related phrases, plus challenges related to cleaning up and carrying out other mundane household activities in strange and unique fashions.
Adults have been indulging in everything from basic meme-sharing, through to the following two awesome challenges.
1. Bin Isolation Outing
An hilarious Facebook group that originated in Australia, this community has quickly attracted more than one million(!) members, based around a simple concept. The idea is that since the only outing some people are allowed is to take their wheelie bins down to the kerb for weekly collection, people are carrying out the task in creative ways, involving fancy dress, comedy skits, bin refurbishments and more.
These few sample posts will give you a taste of the tongue-in-cheek flavor of the group:
Ballet Bins by Felicity Brown
ET Stays Home by Keri Watson

2. Iso Isolation Art Replication
A group from Russia kicked off an inspiring and humorous trend by having people replicate classic artworks, using their own bodies and items found at home. The results are often hilarious, but beyond that, they resemble decent performance art pieces in and of themselves. If someone was ambitious enough, they might even arrange a roaming tour of some of these works once the coronavirus situation is in the past.
Here are a few sample posts from this group:
Her Royal Highness with Pokeball and Alfoil, by Helen Yushkova
Fish Out of Water by Anya Carey
Estonian Gothic by Camilla Eagle
And, filled with witty details, Maskea by Isabella Beatrix
Even if you don’t speak a word of Russian, the Iso Isolation group is worth joining for the universal chuckles that come from art appreciation while imprisoned at home.
